History of the Olde English Bulldogge

Many people had began to realize that the English Bulldog had many health problems such as:
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Eye problems such as cherry eye
  • Skin problems
  • Hip displasia
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Most are not free breeders
  • Most are not free whelpers

English bulldogs are not a known dog that can withstand overly cold and hot climates, take long walks, and are not known to be very athletic.  Breeders then decided to "recreate" a more health version of the English Bulldog breed.  This is where the Olde English Bulldogge came into being.

Olde English Bulldogges are more able to:

  • Breathe more freely
  • Less issues with cherry eye
  • Less issues with hip displasia
  • Less issues with hypothyroism
  • Less issues with skin disorders
  • More able to freely breed
  • More able to whelp naturally
  • More athletic
  • More able to withstand temperatures

This in no way means you will never encounter problems with the breed.  With all animals there are things that will crop up.  A good breeder will offer a health guarantee and will stand behind it.  Please do research before buying your new pet and ask about the health guarantee.  Also be aware there is a lot of fraud today.  If you are not able to have a phone conversation and ask questions about a dog or puppy beware.

A good breeder will follow good breeding practices and follow a strict code of ethics such as the one on the IOEBA (International Olde English Bulldogge Association) http://www.ioeba.net/breeders_code_of_ethics.htm

Olde English Bulldogges are not a recognized breed with the AKC.  Olde English Bulldogge registries are:

(IOEBA) International Olde English Bulldogge Association
 (CKC) Connentinental Kennel Club
"NBA" National Bulldogge Association
Just to name a few.

Famous Bulldogs

Because of its aggressive yet appealing features, the Bulldog has been one of the most highly favored icons for many different organizations. For one, United Kingdom has adopted it to be a national icon expressing that its citizens relate very well to its character.

Throughout the world, there are some twenty-five different sports teams that have adopted the Bulldog as their icon. These teams are involved in sports anywhere from Rugby, Hockey, American Football, Basketball, Lacrosse, or Soccer. Even the number of university sports teams that use the Bulldog as their mascot proves how popular they really are. In the United States of America alone, there are about twenty-eight different universities that have adopted this icon. These include the famous Handsome Dan of Yale University. Apart from the United States, bulldog mascots are also popular in other countries such as England where it is used by Churchill College and the Philippines where it is used by the National University.

Bulldogs are also highly popular in secondary schools as some eighty schools in North America use them as school icons. In addition, even the United States Marine Corps have adopted this icon and so have the United States’ Third Infantry Division and the New York City Fire Department.

The presence of this lovable canine breed in countless different organizations shows how human beings have such high regard of them. They have traits and characteristics deeply revered by people. In addition to this, their noteworthy attitude towards little children has also helped them become so popular. Bulldogs have been portrayed by many different cartoon characters. Warner Brothers alone has created four different bulldog characters shown in different animations. Even Looney Tunes and Disney have made such characters. Also in animation is the father and son tandem of Spike and Tyke of MGM’s Tom and Jerry and Butch of Droopy Dog.

Bulldogs have also been famous in written literature. It has been used or described in many famous written works such as Shakespeare’s King Henry the Sixth. Bulldogs have also been used in different films. Some of these include Regi from the film “About a Dog,” and Mr. Beefy from Adam Sandler’s Little Nicky. Different television appearances can also be noted. This includes appearances in the World Wrestling Federation (now World Wrestling Entertainment), some music videos of famous artists such as Fall Out Boy, and MTV.

If these popular bulldogs cannot be used as a testament to their highly notable nature, then perhaps we should place our attention on the number of families who have adopted Bulldogs as family pets. All over the world, the number of Bulldogs placed in homes has been significantly increasing. Perhaps one cannot really say which of the Bulldogs is most famous as the breed itself is a very popular one. The numbers of different organizations that have chosen it to represent them or look up to its characteristics, show how outstanding this breed really is. This popularity is not merely for its physical appearances but more importantly for the admiration people have shown regarding their personality and temperament.
